Rice Exporters Asked Help from Government

Rice Exporters Asked help from Government to provide financial support to rice industry which is almost collapsing under setback of declining prices and pressure from the banks.

Muhammad Shafique Ch the chairman of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan said that the rice sector generating thousands of jobs, foreign exchange earnings from rice sector of more than 2 billion dollars continue to suffer all stakeholders from producers to exporters and millers. The new crop of rice bother this situation as around 500,000 tons of Pakistani rice from prior crops could not be exported and is decomposing in godowns. The new crop will more imbalance the rice market and the result will be not good for hundreds of rice millers.

According to a chairman of REAP, Trade of Pakistani rice facing many challenges due to rising prices of agriculture inputs and its export may decline during this year. Rice exports are contributing in foreign exchange, but this sector continually being ignored by the federal government.

At present, Indian rice exporters are offering low rates for basmati rice in the international market as Pakistani exporters prices are high that’s why our major importing countries are switching to Indian rice. Under this situation, Mr Shafique Ch said that our exporters are not in a position to purchase rice paddy from farmers because of a shortage of cash flows. Therefore, Government should take immediate measures to support Pakistani exporters to contribute more for Pakistan.
